By Sophie Cornish OPPOSITION IS growing over plans to shift the New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club closer to the pier. The New Brighton Club says its upstairs view of Pegasus Bay will be ruined if the move goes ahead. The surf club was damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and needs to decide if it will rebuild on the current site, or move inside Development Christchurch Ltd’s foreshore development area. Surf club president Jimmy Gaskell told Pegasus Post a decision would be made in the coming months. But New Brighton Club manager Glennys Le Breton said any move that would block its view could be opposed. “We’ve got steps that we want to take but we don’t want to make that public just yet,” said Ms Le Breton. Learn to Surf owner Aaron Lock says moving the club closer to the pier will create congestion between surfers and swimmers. “For most of the surfers, the best surfing area is that 100-200m by the pier,” he said. •Turn to page 5

MOE silent over school site sale Community groups feel ignored By Sophie Cornish COMMUNITY groups fighting to stop the sale of the Central New Brighton School site are frustrated at the silence from the Ministry of Education. Renew Brighton manager Sylvia Smyth said 329 letters were sent to the MOE in midDecember. However, Miss Smyth is yet to hear whether they were even received. MOE deputy secretary head of education infrastructure service Kim Shannon did not respond to questions about the letters. However, she said the MOE is aware there is significant community interest in the retention of the school site and the Roy Stokes Hall. Pegasus Post reported in late November the Seaview Rd site was in the process of being disposed of by MOE. The school was closed at the end of 2015 due to earthquake damage.

Roy Stokes Hall, located on the site, was built in 1977 after a large fundraising effort from the community, which fundraised $108,000 of the $150,000 needed. Renew Brighton currently holds a license to occupy some rooms on the site and the Christchurch Circus Trust also leases the hall.

“City council has been great. The community board are advising that we move onto the next step, coming up with a business plan for the site . . . I think it is a really good idea because the hall is expensive to maintain longterm and we are really thinking through whether we could manage that as a community,” said Miss Smyth. She hopes this will give the groups more time to stop the sale. “It gives us a bit more legitimacy,” she said. Renew Brighton’s license at the site has a break right, meaning if someone purchases the land, the new landlord would only be required to give the group three months notice to move out.

WHALE POOL WATER An issue with the water level at the whale pool in the New Brighton seaside playground is currently being worked through by city council staff. Recreation sports and events operations manager Nigel Cox said the pool’s water level during the day has been receding. Adjustments are being made to ensure the water level remains constant. The pool is scheduled to start draining at 9pm and begin refilling at 7am each day. The water is kept overnight in tanks underneath the pool to save on heating costs and improve the overall sustainability of the playground. DONNELL PARK REPAIRS Work has started on the maintenance of Donnell Park in Burwood. City council head of parks Brent Smith said mowing frequencies at the park have been altered and more regular maintenance is being carried out. A large amount of work is currently being priced at the park, including the repair and renewal of the tennis and basketball courts, paths, drinking fountain and toilet block.

Flying high in Brighton AN ESTIMATED 7000 people flocked to New Brighton beach on Saturday for the SummerTimes Kite Day event. Run by the city council, the free event attracted families, kite-makers and enthusiasts who battled the 31 deg C heat. One of them was Julie Adam, also known as ‘The Kite Lady’, who lives in Christchurch but travels around New Zealand

running kite-making workshops for children with her business Skylines and Bylines. Ms Adam liaised with some of the guest kite flyers who attended the popular Kite Day event. One of the guests at the event was Perrin Melchior, of Auckland, who uses the recycled skins of damaged kite surfing kites to make intricate 3D and box kites.

Ms Adam says flying a kite is the best way to raise the spirits and is also a great social activity. “Whenever I fly a kite, people come and talk to me. It makes people smile and they’ll come over and tell me stories about kites they used to fly and ask to have a go. There’s a really nice community kind of feeling to it,” she said.

Surf club move may block sea view

Community behind wedding A WEDDING once cancelled due to family illness went ahead on Saturday with the help of a generous community. Ashley and Zane Thoms were married among family and friends, including their children, Millie, 5, and Luke, 3, at Richmond’s Avebury House. Previously, their wedding plans were cancelled when Mrs Thoms’ brother was diagnosed with a rare disease.

They decided on a low-key wedding followed by a barbecue at their home in North New Brighton. When Mrs Thoms posted on the People’s Independent’s Republic Facebook page to borrow some fairy lights, trestle tables and decorations, she was met with an overwhelming response from the community. What followed was offers from more than 100 people to

provide a helping hand, photography, decorations, wedding vehicles, a wedding cake, suits and a wedding dress, make-up, hair, a spray tan, pounamu necklaces, and the use of Richmond’s Avebury House. Mrs Thoms posted on the page following the wedding to thank the community. “I am truly happy and blessed to now be Mrs Thoms,” she said.

The swimmers don’t really care where they swim on the beach, it’s all the same patch of water.” Mr Gaskell said there are pluses and minuses to both locations. “The main plus for moving to a new location is that we will be able to provide a better lifeguarding service,” he said. “At the moment where the surf club is located, we have everyone on one side of us. Everyone is

swimming in front of the car park, all the way to the pier. So for us to be in the middle of that area, then we can be closer, so we have a 180 degree area of patrolling rather than a 90 degree.” The surf club hopes to meet with the Coastal-Burwood Community Board within the next month to see how it can help the club make a decision. “With being a communitybased service that does things for the community, we don’t really want to upset them, so that’s why we are taking our time with the decision,” said Mr Gaskell. “It’s about providing the best service we can.”

Surf champ stays true to Waimairi SPORTS By Sophie Cornish CONOR MCLENNAN is living every young surfers dream – hitting the school books in the morning and riding waves in the afternoon. The Raglan Surf Academy student recently won the under-18 title at the national surfing championships in Gisborne. Originating from Waimairi Beach, Conor, 17, represented his home club, North Wai Boardriders, in the competition. He moved to Raglan in 2016 to start at the academy. The programme is part of Raglan Area School and was set up in 1998. It allows students to complete NCEA while learning about surfing both in and out of the classroom. “We write reports about surfing, the safety of surfing and trying to get out to surf breaks, then every lunchtime we will finish up and go surfing. It’s a great life, I love it,” said Conor. The national final came down to a tight finish, which Conor said made time go by “very, very slowly.” “It was the best feeling ever, I don’t think words can describe how stoked I was to win that,

I’ve been working so hard for it for the last year and it all paid off. It’s a really good way for me to start the year,” he said. His parents watched on from the beach. “It was a very cool feeling to win in front of my mum and dad . . . to win in front of them was probably the greatest feeling of it all,” he said.

The former Christchurch Boys’ High School student won another national title in 2014 at the national scholastic secondary schools championship. He was also the under-17 Billabong grom series champion last year. Conor is already looking ahead to the future, hoping to secure himself a spot in the

Steel frames go up at new QE II schools THE FIRST pieces of vertical steel have been fitted into place for the new campus to house both Avonside Girls and Shirley Boys’ high schools. CPB Contractors project manager John McCullough said 20 per cent of the project located at QE II Park is now complete, and things are on track to open in term two of 2019. Mr McCullough said 50 per cent of the civil works have been completed. Since ground work began in July, 5000 piles have been driven into the ground at the QE II site, and 40 per cent of the foundation work has been completed. “We hope to move on to roofing in February and external cladding will begin soon after,” he said. There are currently about 60 workers on the site which is set to increase to 100 by March. Shirley Boys’ High principal John Laurenson said the campus is going to be an incredible asset for the city’s east. “While the campus will serve our students during school hours, we are really excited to be able to open our doors to the public beyond those hours. It really will be a campus for the community.”

Booms return to collect Avon River trash RIVER CARE groups responsible for the annual Mother of All Clean Up events on the Avon and Heathcote rivers are applauding the city council for reinstating rubbish booms in Dallington and Woolston. The three groups – AvonHeathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network and Avon-Ōtākaro Network – lobbied the city council to reintroduce the booms following successful river cleanup events in which tonnes of rubbish was collected.

The booms gather floating debris which is then harvested by City Care and sent to landfill. Rubbish booms were previously deployed in this way but were removed following the earthquakes. “Reintroducing the booms will greatly reduce the amount of rubbish ending up along the edges of the rivers and estuary,” said Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust co-ordinator Tanya Jenkins. “Of course the best solution would be if members of the

public didn’t discard rubbish into streets and gutters in the first place, as much of it ends up in the rivers.” Another Mother of All Clean Ups is being planned for May 18 with the continuing support of City Care.

BLUEBERRY AND NECTARINE ROSE WINE DESERT Ingredients 1½ cups rosé wine ½ cup caster sugar 1 Tbsp gelatine 1 cup blueberries 2 nectarines Serving of vanilla ice cream Directions Combine the wine and sugar in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat for 5-6min or until the sugar is completely dissolved and the wine comes to a simmer.

8 lamb loin chops 1 handful fresh parsley

Combine rind of one lemon, two tbsp lemon juice, crushed garlic, mint (dried), salt, pepper and oil in a small bowl. Place lamb chops (mid-loin) in a shallow dish and pour

Reduce heat to low. Transfer 1/4 cup of the hot wine mixture to a small bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine, stirring to dissolve. Pour the gelatine mixture into the rest of the hot wine and stir well. Remove from heat and set aside for 10min to cool but not set. Divide half the blueberries among four serving glasses. Peel and slice one of the nectarines and divide between the glasses. Carefully pour half the wine over the fruit and refrigerate for 30min. Top with remaining blueberries, nectarine and wine, then cover glasses with plastic cling film and refrigerate until set. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Lincoln Decision Day helps students choose future 2018 has come around quickly. Maybe school is fast becoming a memory, or perhaps you are looking for a new direction. On 25 January Lincoln University is holding its Decision Day event on campus, from 9am to 4pm. Experts will be available to answer your questions about what to study, help you enrol and discuss your options so that the decision about where to study becomes easier. Lincoln is gearing up for a big year, adding new majors to its popular Commerce degrees as well as new programmes, to make sure it is offering choice to students. Students are now able to include a transferable environmental management major into a commerce degree, ensuring they are ready to meet the environmental challenges they will face in the future. Or they can include Event Management, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Tourism Management and Water Management, bringing new skills, perspectives and depth to their studies. There are also new separate majors in Supply Chain Management and Global Business in the Bachelor of Commerce as well as new programmes such as the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA) and the Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture and Professional Accounting), both of which prepare students to qualify as a professional accountants.

There is also the Master of Business in Finance, providing a perspective on finance in New Zealand and international contexts, with reference to sustainability, agribusiness, entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialisation Lincoln still has places in its on-campus student accommodation available, offering an opportunity to enjoy the whole range of student life. MICHAEL Jackson fans will be moonwalking their way to theatres next month as the Michael Jackson HIStory Show makes it's return to New Zealand. Aer an approximate 5000+ performances in the past nine years across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Indonesia, South Africa, Canada and the US, word of this show has spread amongst the MJ community, with the show being inundated with pleas to come back to the NZ stage. It was this persistent devotion of admirers that allowed producer John Van Grinsven to hear the requests loud and clear, ultimately leading to the Michael Jackson HIStory Show's return. e world-class production showcases all of Michael Jackson's greatest hits live on stage, complemented by the famous dance moves that fans all know, love and aspire to do. Star of the show, Dantanio, will be accompanied by a lively six-piece band, four groovy backup dancers and a phenomenal lighting team. e show features 40 diﬀerent customised costumes, twenty of which are for the MJ character alone. Over 100 hours have been dedicated to the lighting design, which makes use of 160+ moving lights and over 2000 lighting cues arranged to punctuate and enhance the musical elements of the show. Playing the role of Michael is Dantanio, a South African theatre performer and solo recording artist who has been studying and impersonating Jackson since the age of nine! e Michael Jackson HIStory Show takes place at the Isaac eatre Royal on Monday 19th February 2018.
